I Have a Swollen Bump On My Gum. Is That Normal?

Gums are frequently the target of trauma. People regularly develop lumps, bumps, or cuts on their gums. While temporary gum issues due to trauma are common, bumps that stay on your gums for a while or grow larger can be cause for concern. Here are some common reasons you may have bumps on your gums:

Mouth Ulcers or Canker Sores

Mouth ulcers are also called canker sores, and they can be quite painful. Canker sores can be found on your gums easily. They are bright red, painful bumps, often with a white center. If you have a large or painful canker sore, you can try a saltwater rinse to help it heal. You can also try over-the-counter canker sore relief products. If your canker sore does not appear to be healing, you can give our office a call for an appointment.

Mouth Trauma

If you have been hit in the face or mouth due to an accident or an injury, one of the symptoms of trauma is swollen gums. While slightly swollen gums after an accident are normal if you have loose teeth, that is something to be concerned about. You can treat your swollen gums with an ice bag, but you need to call our office if you have loose teeth or the swelling gets worse.

Tooth Decay

Swollen bumps on your gums can also be an indicator of an infection. Small cavities can be treated quickly, but if the tooth is neglected, the cavity can continue to grow. Because bacteria cause cavities, they can also create an infection along your tooth and gumline, and that infection can create a bump along your gumline. The bump may be quite painful, and you may also run a low-grade fever. This can be accompanied by bad breath or a foul taste in your mouth.
