If you worry about your gum health, give us a call today and let us take a look!

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, or its more technical name periodontal disease, is the infection or inflammation of the gum tissue surrounding and supporting your teeth. This can be caused by several factors, such as smoking, bad diet, bad hygiene habits, and even pregnancy or genetics. It can lead to halitosis, painful and swollen tissue, bone loss, and eventually tooth loss.

What Should I Look For?

Looking for symptoms of periodontal disease can be a challenging task. In its earliest stages (often called gingivitis), it can have very few or no symptoms. A trained professional like our hygienists and dentists can spot these differences more easily than the untrained eye, which heightens the importance of your six-month check-up. If you are experiencing some differences, watch for receding gums or a gap between your gums and your teeth. It is also important to remember that healthy gums do not bleed! If you experience frequent bleeding, that may indicate advancing periodontal disease. Gum disease can also leave your gums swollen due to inflammation and could make them tender to the touch.

Treatment Options

If caught early enough, gum disease can usually be reversed with a solid deep cleaning by our experienced staff. You will leave feeling fresh and clean all over again. If it is more advanced, then there are other methods to get rid of it such as scaling, root planing, or surgery.

Preventative Tips

Maintaining a good oral care routine is essential when it comes to taking the best possible care of your gums. While we stress brushing and flossing to take care of your teeth, your gums also benefit from the practice. They are cleaned but also stimulated into healing abrasions and other potential issues that could start infections. It is also important that you go to your six-month check-up so that we can make sure your gums are in perfect health and help you reverse any damage that has already been done.

Martin Periodontics cares about your teeth and gums equally, and will help you find yourself at your best in no time! To get you back into your best health, give us a call at (513) 445-4282 and set up an appointment or checkup at your earliest convenience.
