I Noticed My Teeth Look Larger. Is That a Problem?

When you smile in the mirror, we know you are checking out your teeth! We cannot blame you because they are simply marvelous! However, when glancing in the mirror, do your teeth look bigger to you? If they look a little larger than usual, it is time to ask some questions.

Do You Use Tobacco?

One reason your teeth may look bigger is because your gums have shrunk. Tobacco users often have smaller gums than people who do not use tobacco. Tobacco use reduces the blood flow to your gums, which can shrink your gums. In addition to shrinking your gums, tobacco use increases the time you will need to heal from any dental procedure, as well as mouth ulcers and trauma.

Gum Disease

Often, gum disease causes your gum tissue to shrink due to inflammation of your gum tissue. If you have gum disease in an early stage, such as gingivitis, our dentists can recommend techniques to cure it. However, if your gum disease is at the periodontitis stage, dental practitioners try to keep it under control. If your gum disease is not in remission, gum tissue can shrink considerably, which makes your teeth look larger.

Age

As adults get older, they might experience some shrinkage to their gum tissue. You can help your gums as you age by continuing to brush and floss, as well as eating plenty of fruits and vegetables. Our dental practitioners will measure your gum depth each time you come in for a cleaning and checkup to help keep track of the health of your gums.

Too Much Gum Tissue?

Some adults have more gum tissue than others, usually due to heredity. If you have fleshy gums, you may notice that your teeth look smaller than you think they should. Luckily, if your gums are very fleshy, you can have some of your gum tissue removed, either through a traditional procedure or through a new laser procedure that can remove gum tissue without a lot of blood or sutures.
