What is a Comprehensive Periodontal Evaluation?

A Comprehensive Periodontal Evaluation (CPE) is a thorough oral examination we perform to determine whether you have periodontal disease and other related conditions. You might be coming in for regular dental cleaning and other oral exams, but these checks might not specifically look for signs of periodontal disease. This is why it is essential to come in for a CPE.

Areas CPE Assesses

To understand the essence of CPE, you need to know some of the areas it assesses. To begin with, CPE assesses your teeth. Our dental professionals will examine the health of your teeth and their correlation with your gums. They will also investigate any dental restrictions you might have, like dental implants, dental fillings, dentures, and crowns. During teeth examination, our professionals will also note the position of your teeth and how close they are to each other.

Another area CPE focuses on is your plaque. Our dentists will carefully examine the location and amount of plaque or tartar in your mouth. Keep in mind that the presence of plaque in your mouth increases the risk of periodontal disease. In case you have plaque, we will remove it through oral cleaning.

Gums are also assessed during CPE. Our experts use an instrument known as a dental probe to measure the depth of your gum pockets. This instrument also shows how well your gums are attached to your teeth. Any bleeding experienced in the course of this exercise will also be probed. Furthermore, if you have inflamed gums, our professionals will examine them.
