Can Gum Disease Spread by Sharing Beverages?

Posted on 12/23/2021 by Martin Periodontics
Can Gum Disease Spread by Sharing Beverages?Gum disease is a serious oral condition that can lead to tooth loss. It is mainly caused by bacteria that accumulate around your gums and teeth. There have been several concerns on whether gum disease can spread from one person to another. As much as gum disease is not contagious, there are chances of it spreading from one person to another.

The Spread of Gum Disease

There are chances of gum disease spreading from one person to another. Therefore, when you share a drink with an infected person, you could get the disease. The bacteria that cause gum disease can also move from a person to another through kissing. Activities like sharing a piece of food or eating utensils could result in the same. As much as these activities seem simple and harmless, they lead to the exchange of over 50 million bacteria! These include both good and bad bacteria that could be harmful to your oral health. The bad bacteria attack your tooth enamel and gums, leading to tooth decay and cavities. Therefore, sharing a drink with someone who has bad bacteria increases the chances of you having oral problems. Individuals with poor oral hygiene habits are more likely to have bad bacteria.

However, this shouldn't worry you because there are ways through which you can prevent damage. While sharing a beverage can contribute to causing gum disease, the disease itself is not contagious. In fact, most of the bad bacteria you get by sharing a beverage already live in your mouth. Even if a good number of them are transferred to your mouth, it won't change a lot. You might wonder why you share beverages with friends and family but don't develop gum disease. It is mainly because you maintain good oral hygiene. Brushing at least twice daily and flossing will help prevent gum disease even if you share a beverage with others. Contact our offices for more information on gum disease.
