Are Implants Really Better?

When you lose your teeth, whether it’s one or all of them, they need to be replaced. Without replacement, normal functions, such as eating and speaking, become difficult. Traditionally, replacing missing teeth meant bridges, partial dentures or full dentures. However, technological advances have led to dental implants. Implants have become the replacement option of choice, and they are offered here at Martin Periodontics. However, many people question if they are better.

Traditional Tooth Replacement

It used to be when you lost your teeth you had a few options. If you were only missing a couple of teeth, you could get a bridge, which is a ceramic restoration that relies on two crowns anchoring on adjacent healthy teeth, with the false teeth in between.

If you were only missing a few teeth in the same area of your mouth, you could get a partial denture, or a prosthetic device that rests directly on your gums, and has the additional security of metal clasps on adjacent teeth.

Or, if you were missing an entire bridge of teeth, a full denture was your only option. These prosthetic teeth are set into a gum-colored base that rests directly on your gums.

Dental Implants

Advancements in dental technology have added another option to the mix. Dental implants are small, titanium rods that are surgically implanted into your jawbone. The implants, after healing, are then outfitted with abutments, and your false teeth placed on top.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants offer numerous advantages over traditional tooth loss treatments:
•  Bridges require that the healthy teeth on either side of the gap left behind by missing teeth be prepared for crowns. Implants do not require those perfectly healthy teeth be altered in any way.
•  They blend in naturally with the rest of your smile. There are no metal clasps, like partial dentures.
•  Implants can be used to replace any number of missing teeth. An entire arch of teeth can be replaced with 6 to 8 implants, although some procedures can use as little as 4.
•  Your false teeth are supported by the implants, rather than your gums, which means less discomfort.
•  Implants are permanent. There is no need to remove them for cleaning. They can be cared for just like your natural teeth.
•  Implants can put an end to the bone loss associated with tooth loss. No other replacement option can do this, resulting in the need for denture replacement after a few years.

Are There Any Drawbacks?

While dental implants have numerous benefits, they do have a few drawbacks:
•  They require a surgical procedure to place them.
•  The healing time for implants is lengthy. It can take several months for the implants to fully integrate into the bone.
•  If you lack sufficient bone mass to successfully support the implants, you may require a bone graft first.
•  Implants can fail.
•  Depending upon how many implants you need, the procedure can be rather expensive.

We can help you to weigh the benefits and the drawbacks, allowing you to make the best decision for you.
