Laser Treatment

Gum disease, also often referred to as periodontal disease, is a serious oral health condition. Early stages, which are the most easily treated, are the most difficult to recognize, and therefore go undiagnosed. Without proper treatment, it only gets worse. Your inflamed gum tissue provides a pathway for bacteria to travel underneath. Your gums recede, your jawbone weakens, and your teeth become loose. Eventually, your teeth can even fall out. At Martin Periodontics, we can treat your gum disease, allowing your gums to heal. We utilize the latest technology and techniques. One of those technologies is laser treatment.

Scaling and Root Planing

To treat your gum disease, we must first clean the surfaces of your teeth, including the roots. To do this, we use a procedure known as scaling and root planing. Scaling involves the use of a specialized scaling tool, which is designed to remove plaque, tartar (hardened plaque that cannot be removed by regular brushing) and bacteria from the surfaces of your teeth, including between them and under the gum line. Root planing is the smoothing of the root surfaces of your teeth. We carefully remove plaque, bacteria, and toxins, leaving a clean surface on which bacteria cannot adhere. Finally, we finish with delivering a microbial agent below the gum line to kill any lingering bacteria.

Using the Laser

While lasers are fairly new development for use in the dental field, there are several studies that show the use of one for gum disease treatment is quite effective when used in conjunction with scaling and root planing. Equipped with different wavelengths, lasers can be tailored to meet your specific needs. Before we begin scaling and root planing, the laser helps by removing infected gum tissue from around the surface of the tooth. This provides us with better access to thoroughly clean your teeth. Lasers can also be used to kill bacteria hiding in deep periodontal pockets, effectively disinfecting the area.

Other Oral Applications for Laser Treatment

Though lasers are commonly used for the treatment of gum disease, they also have other applications in dentistry:
•  If you have cavities, a laser can be used to clear out the decay, and prepare the holes for fillings
•  Preparing your teeth for crowns.
•  Whitening.
•  Regenerating bone and ligament tissues.
•  Removing lesions for the purpose of an oral biopsy.

Benefits of Laser Treatment

The benefits of laser treatment include:
•  You will experience less pain. This includes both during the procedure as well as after.
•  Your gums are cauterized as the laser cuts, stopping the bleeding right away.
•  Minimally invasive. Your gums do not have to be cut with a scalpel.
•  Treatment can help to disinfect and seal periodontal pockets.
•  With your gum disease effectively treated, your teeth can be saved from falling out.
•  Lasers allow for preservation of more of the natural tooth in instances of filling preparation.
•  Because there is less pain involved and minimal to no bleeding, lasers can be a good option if you have a fear of visiting the dentist.

With the use of the laser, we can more effectively treat your gum disease in a less invasive manner. For more information on laser treatment, and to find out if it is right for you, contact Martin Periodontics today.
