Periodontal Maintenance![]() What is Periodontal Maintenance?Periodontal maintenance is a fancy and intimidating name for a pretty standard and commonplace institution. Periodontal maintenance is the practice of continued therapy that keeps your gum tissue strong and healthy. Keeping your gums at their peak also means that your teeth and jaw are at their best as well, since gum disease affects both of those areas incredibly negatively. Is It Important?Absolutely! Plaque, tartar, and calculus are the number one causes of gum disease. These substances are full of bacteria which are toxic in and of themselves, but also leave waste all over your mouth. These bacteria are constantly attacking your gums, teeth, and whatever tissue they can find within your mouth. These bacteria also carry the risk of traveling throughout the rest of your body too, causing other potentially more dangerous problems. Gum disease has been linked to strokes, diabetes, and heart diseases. While you can prevent the buildup of tartar and plaque by brushing and flossing daily, you can’t keep it all at bay. That’s where we come in, deep cleaning each and every tooth and monitoring your gums for signs of infection. This will happen at your six-month checkup, which makes them even more important! What Happens in a Maintenance Visit? The majority of what happens in your visit is a simple examination. We will examine each and every tooth at all angles using mirrors and small tools to probe crevices for weakness. We will also examine what we call “pockets” in your gums, which are little gaps where bacteria can collect. These pockets need to be checked for depth and cleanliness, as deep gaps are harder to clean. We will clean your teeth to get off all the damaging plaque and tartar, and finally, we may take some x-rays to check for problems below the gum line or the surface of your teeth. Martin Periodontics is dedicated to your whole mouth, not just your teeth. With all the risks that gum disease carries, we like to nip it in the bud before it can cause you more pain and hassle than it already does. If you are worried about your gums or haven't had an exam in a while, please give us a call today and schedule an appointment where we can make sure you are in tip-top shape. |
