TMJ Treatments

Your mouth has many important jobs. To effectively do these jobs, your mouth depends heavily upon many important features. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinge that allows for all of the movements of your jaw, connecting your lower jaw to your skull. If the joint becomes irritated, and subsequently inflamed, all movements can be affected. Simple tasks like eating and speaking become difficult and painful. These are symptoms of a condition known as temporomandibular joint disorder. At Martin Periodontics, we can provide you with treatment options for your TMJ disorder, leaving you to get back to normal function, pain-free.

Treating Your TMJ at Home

There are some patients who respond well to simple at-home remedies. There are a few different things you can do:
•  Jaw exercises. These simple exercises involve simply opening and closing your mouth, stretching the muscles in your mouth and gently working the joint to improve mobility.
•  Moist heat. Heat applied to your jaw can help to relax muscles and improve blood flow.
•  Ice. Ice can help to reduce inflammation.
•  Massage. Gently massaging the joint can help to reduce tension and pain.
•  Eating soft foods. Avoiding foods that irritate the joint, such as hard, crunchy or sticky foods, can help give the joint a much-needed break.

Medications for TMJ

Medication can be used to help reduce your TMJ pain. For some, over the counter pain relievers are enough. However, if they aren’t, we can provide a prescription. There are higher strength pain relievers or muscle relaxers, which help to ease the tension in the jaw muscles and lessen the pressure exerted on the TMJ.

TMJ Therapy

A nighttime mouth guard, or occlusal device, is a common TMJ treatment. We can provide you with a custom fit mouth guard, which fits over your top teeth, to wear while you sleep, when uncontrollable grinding and clenching often occurs. The oral device helps to hold your jaw in proper alignment. It also provides a cushion when you bite down, redistributing the force and easing the pressure on the joint.

Injections to Treat TMJ

Botox injections can be administered to alleviate pain. While commonly used for cosmetic reasons (lessening the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles), Botox can be used to relax the muscles in your jaw. Clenching is minimized, thus relieving much of the pressures on the TMJ. The injections have no downtime and do not interfere with your daily activities. It is important to note that Botox injections are not a permanent solution, and only last a few months at a time. However, periodic injections can provide great relief.

TMJ Surgery

If you do not respond to any other type of treatment, surgery can sometimes be used as a last effort. There are a few different types of surgery that can be used, depending upon your specific situation:
•  Arthroscopy. This is the least invasive option.
•  Arthrocentesis. Fluid is injected to flush debris from the joint.
•  Open jaw surgery. The most invasive option, open jaw surgery aims to fix a structural issue in your mouth.

Any pain in your mouth and jaw is not normal and should be addressed as soon as possible. For more information on TMJ treatments, and to schedule your consultation, contact Martin Periodontics today at (513) 445-4282!
